About Chiropractic

How chiropractic works

Understand how chiropractic works, why the spine matters so much, and how it differs from other treatment methods.

Fundamentals

What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a globally recognised, holistic method of care that focuses on the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of dysfunctions of the musculoskeletal system – in particular the spine and the nervous system.

The focus lies on the so-called subluxation: a dysfunction of a joint that can impair the surrounding nervous system. Through targeted, gentle manual corrections, natural function is restored and the body is enabled to heal itself.

American chiropractic is characterised by a thorough course of study (Doctor of Chiropractic) and evidence-based treatment methods. In Germany it is a comparatively young discipline that is increasingly gaining recognition.

Understanding

The fundamentals of chiropractic

Three central concepts that make chiropractic treatment easier to understand.

How does the nervous system work?

The nervous system controls every function of your body – from movement and sensory perception to organ function. It consists of the brain, the spinal cord, and the peripheral nerves. Signals are transmitted through the spine. When this function is impaired, it can lead to a wide range of complaints.

Why is the spine so important?

The spine protects the sensitive spinal cord and, at the same time, serves as the body's central supporting structure. Any misalignment or blockage can compress nerves and trigger pain, numbness, or dysfunction. A healthy spine is the foundation for optimal neural communication.

Cause instead of symptoms

While many treatment methods aim to suppress symptoms such as pain, chiropractic looks for the underlying cause. By correcting dysfunctions of the spine, the body's natural ability to heal is activated – for lasting results.

Differences

Chiropractic in comparison

How does chiropractic differ from other treatment methods? An overview.

Comparison

Chiropractic vs. Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy focuses primarily on movement therapy and strengthening the muscles. Chiropractic, on the other hand, focuses on diagnosing and correcting dysfunctions of the spine and nervous system through precise manual techniques. Both approaches can complement each other very well.

Comparison

Chiropractic vs. Osteopathy

Osteopathy takes a holistic approach with a focus on connective tissue, organ systems, and the body's structures. Chiropractic is more specifically directed at the nervous system and the spine. The training and the techniques also differ considerably.

Comparison

Chiropractic vs. Orthopaedics

Orthopaedists are medical specialists who can also treat surgically and with medication. Chiropractors focus exclusively on manual, non-surgical treatment methods.
